The Key West School of Zen Spearfishing was active between 1974-1977 — and was shrouded in mystery. In the mid-70s, before mega-”cattle-marans” dumped hundreds of people on the offshore reef, this ad ran in local underground newspapers with a phone number and a P.O. Box. New participants were asked to “meet at dawn at the foot of Duval Street at the Gulf Oil Terminal Pier”…and to “bring your spirit, vision and your speargun.” The Gulf Oil docks eventually gave way to the Pier House Resort. A few longtime locals remain on the island who were members of this exclusive group, who referred to themselves as Key West’s original “Watermen.”
