The Walrus

The original Walrus, at 1911 11th Street (at Walnut) was opened in 1972 by local Boulder restaurateur Frank Day. It was the early, trippy hippie era in Boulder (think of the unknown and unwashed Eagles playing around town to mostly-empty rooms). The cavernous, beer-soaked floor in the basement became one of the town’s most popular spots for C.U. students for generations. It was THE gameday bar to watch the Buffs play, and always packed on Saturdays during football season. It’s rumored that the Walrus offered Boulder’s first fresh salad bar (it was originally opened as an eatery), but it fully embraced it’s rightful designation as a beloved dive bar in the 80s and remained so until it’s closing in May 2018, after an amazing and storied 46-year run.
