La Bodega Key West
The name La Bodega (1976-1989) was derived and inspired by the small corner grocery stores on on the Lower East Side of New York. Walking into the old-world style grocery and sandwich joint, you felt like you were transported back to the early 1900s. The sandwiches were ordered by number, and the most requested was the #6 (2 cheeses, avocado, and sprouts), created by founder Marie Cimino. Sundries were stocked in case you ran out of an item at home. “Alice’s Famous Brownies” were a covert secret reference to the Alice B. Toklas cookbook, invented by another “Bodega” founder, Bill Divens.
